The year 2022 has arrived, bringing with it twelve months of full of promise. No doubt the year will bring its own challenges, but let’s take a moment to focus on the potential of the year to come. What adventures await us?
It’s true that in a few months you’ll be able to walk into a garden center or home improvement store and find row upon row of vegetables ready for you to transplant into your garden. But there’s a certain magic to growing plants from seed, not to mention opportunities to save money and grow exactly what you want.
It may be cold and gray outside, but inside you and your family can explore the green, buzzing world of nature through a great book. FWBG | BRIT educators are always looking for great titles to share with readers of all ages—following is a selection of some of our favorites. They are all books that will plant seeds of literacy, STEM skills and love of the natural world.
Many people regard winter as a bleak and barren time in the garden. Deciduous trees have lost their leaves, perennials have died back and the garden has entered its period of rest. Such a setting, however, provides the perfect foil for the “gems of winter”—those shrubs that put forth their blossoms in January and February and enliven the winter landscape with beauty.
Botanists and horticulturists love a challenge. That’s why this year we’re introducing a new feature in the newsletter: What Is This Thing? This month, Martha L. of Fort Worth asks us to identify a plant with small flowers than never open. The answer tells a fascinating story about the reproductive strategies of plants–and why some prefer closed to open marriages.
