Self-Guided Tours

BRIT Building

  • Self-guided tours are available during regular working hours, Monday to Friday (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.). Visitors are encouraged to walk the grounds to experience our pocket prairie, pollinator pathway, special exhibitions, and unique sustainable building features like our bamboo ceilings, sinker cypress wall, living roof, and more. Stop by our Welcome Center to pick up a free map guide, or use one of the digital touring options below.
    • LEED Tour: Signs around the BRIT building and immediate outdoor campus include a phone number for English and Spanish feature descriptions and a QR code for more information on the topic. 
    • App Tours: Enjoy exploring at your own pace! Our touring app, BRIT Guide, is available for use on your iOS or Android smartphone. Download the BRIT Guide app and learn all about BRIT with an interactive map and self-guided tour options.
    • Audio ToursLet your headphones be your guide! Use an internet-enabled device to play audio files from your smartphone or download the mp3 files to a stand-alone player of your choice.

Saturday Art in The Garden Tours

Our Art in the Garden tour meets in the Leonard Courtyard on the first Saturday of most months, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.
This is a lively, interactive tour with a relaxed pace. Informative docents explain how the art pieces in the garden have been placed to enhance the landscape. Free with FWBG|BRIT membership or Garden admission*. This is a weather-proof tour – rain or shine, you’re in for an interesting time.

Begonia Collection – North America’s Largest Begonia Collection

Our Begonia Collection tour meets in the Leonard Courtyard on the second Saturday of most months, at 1:00 p.m.

Free with FWBG|BRIT membership or Garden admission*. There are more than 1,800 species in the genus Begonia. The Botanic Garden collection contains over 350 species and over 600 hybrids, making it the largest begonia collection in North America. In 2015, the FWBG became the first botanic garden in Texas to receive accreditation for its begonia collection through the Plant Collections Network and currently has the only accredited begonia collection in the nation.

Tour length: 45 to 60 minutes
Terrain: Flat, even ground, some gravel paths, not wheelchair-accessible
Group size: Groups of up to 20 guests are welcome.

Guided Tours and Special Interest Tours

The Japanese Garden – our Signature Tour

Join knowledgeable docents for a guided tour of our beautiful Japanese Garden. Enjoy lovely vistas while docents discuss design elements, history, and the cultural significance of Japanese gardens. Plants and animals found in the garden are also discussed.

Tour length: 75 to 90 minutes – docents will modify the tour to suit the guests.
Terrain: Mildly uneven paths and stairs.
Group size: Groups of up to 48 guests are welcome.
Pricing:
• FWBG Members — $0 – a benefit of your membership!
• Children, age 5 and younger — $0
• Children, ages 6 to 15 — $7-9
• Adults, aged 16 to 64 — $15-16
• Adults, age 65 and older — $13-15
$2.00 per person discount for groups of 20 or more.

The Japanese Garden “Silver Highlights” Tour

If you would love a docent-led tour of the Japanese Garden but are concerned about your ability to negotiate the challenging terrain this is the tour for you.

Join knowledgeable docents for a guided tour of our beautiful Japanese Garden. Enjoy lovely vistas while docents discuss design elements, history, and the cultural significance of Japanese gardens. Plants and animals found in the garden are also discussed. The pace of this 60-minute tour is slow and relaxed. Guests walk no more than 1/3 of a mile with 3 opportunities for bench-seating rests.

Tour length: 60 minutes – docents will modify the tour to suit the guests. 
Terrain: Mildly uneven terrain, a max of 3 steps with railings and slight elevation changes.
Group size: Groups of up to 16 guests are welcome. (two groups of 8 with a 15-minute stagger start)

Art in the Garden Tour

This is a unique tour scheduled on days other than the free Saturday tours.
Enjoy learning more about selected artworks with a docent. Learn about the history behind amazing works of art in the Garden.
Tour length: 60 minutes – docents will modify the tour to suit the guests.
Terrain: Mildly uneven terrain, inclines, stone, paved pathways, and grassy areas.
Group size: Groups from two up to 15 guests are welcome.
Pricing:

• Children, age 5 and younger — $0
• Children, ages 6 to 15 — $7-9
• Adults, aged 16 to 64 — $15-16
• Adults, age 65 and older — $13-15

BRIT Building

Excited about energy-efficient architecture? Curious about curated rare-book collections? Persuaded that pollinator plants are perfect? Want to learn about water-saving landscaping? A private, guided tour of the BRIT building and grounds is for you!

Terrain: Indoors – stairs/elevators. Outdoors – Mildly uneven terrain, paved pathways
Group size: Groups of up to 10 guests are welcome.
