Imagine if the fate of the world depended on annual rituals of creating decorated eggs to thwart evil spirits, welcome spring and the return of the sun, and offer prayers for wealth and good harvest. Such are the origins of Pysanky, the ancient Ukrainian art of decorating eggs. Dating to prehistoric times, pysanky (meaning ‘to write’) are stunning, colorful eggs “written” by applying beeswax to the surface of an egg in carefully choreographed successive layers. Between each application of wax, the egg is immersed in a vibrantly colored dye bath. Thousands of designs from simple to incredibly complex can be created based on floral, geometric, and animal patterns.
Join instructor Bob Byers to learn basic techniques for this wonderful art form just in time for Easter, with a special focus on butterfly-inspired patterns to celebrate our local tradition – Butterflies in the Garden.

Instructor: Bob Byers has been serving at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden since 2015 and took on his current role as Executive Vice President in 2021. He brings more than 26 years of public gardens experience with previous experience as a landscape architect, Director of Operations, and Associate Executive Director. Bob also taught design, planting design, plant materials, and agricultural engineering at the University of Arkansas. While he loves music and earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree, Bob also earned a Master of Landscape Architecture degree from Louisiana State University building upon a childhood love of gardening and plants working alongside his parents in the family garden. He enjoys growing vegetables and flowers in his Willow Park home garden and learning more about the large and varied Texas flora.
