Armchair Botany Forum: Conserving Texas Native Plant Biodiversity

“Conserving Texas Native Plant Biodiversity: Seed Banking, Biology, & Research at the Botanical Research Institute of Texas”

Anthropogenic activities, including the explosive globalization of the world’s economy, travel, and trade, have placed unprecedented pressure on our planet’s native ecosystems and biodiversity. Narrowly endemic, endangered, or otherwise threatened taxa are especially vulnerable to the resulting impacts caused by human-related activities and climate change, and, unfortunately, the story for plants is no different. As such, conserving native plant biodiversity has increasingly become a top priority for conservation biologists and land managers across the globe. For many plants, this usually involves the wild collection and long-term storage of native plant seeds.

For today’s Armchair Botanist presentation, please join seed bank conservation botanist, Kay Hankins, as she leads us on a guided exploration through the journey of a seed from the field to our very own Conservation Seed Bank here at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden and the Botanical Research Institute of Texas. Along the way, we will also learn more about the importance of plant conservation, the biology of native plant seeds, and some of the many different research projects taking place here at FWBG-BRIT behind the scenes to further support native plant conservation throughout the state.

Our Armchair Botany events are forums for presentation and discussion about botany, herbarium specimens, and collections – and an invitation to get involved!
