The Moon Bridge

The Moon Bridge was fully restored in 2022 and is again open to guests.

Moon bridges play an important role in traditional Japanese Gardens. These high-arched bridges began as pedestrian walkways over canals, but they were adopted by gardeners who appreciated the elegance of their form and their symbolism.

Garden designers typically place moon bridges above still water, so that the bridge and its reflection form a full circle. This circle evokes the full moon, an ancient and meaningful symbol in Japan. In the ancient Shinto religion, the waxing and waning of the moon symbolized the cycle of birth and rebirth. In Buddhism , the moon is a symbol of enlightenment.

We deeply appreciate the generosity of donors who made this restoration possible.
