Butterfly Pysanky
Registration for this class is now closed. We hope to see you for another Botanical Creative Arts class soon!
Imagine if the fate of the world depended on annual rituals of creating decorated eggs to thwart evil spirits, welcome spring and the return of the sun, and offer prayers for wealth and good harvest. Such are the origins of Pysanky, the ancient Ukrainian art of decorating eggs. Dating to prehistoric times, pysanky (meaning ‘to write’) are stunning, colorful eggs “written” by applying beeswax to the surface of an egg in carefully choreographed successive layers. Between each application of wax, the egg is immersed in a vibrantly colored dye bath. Thousands of designs from simple to incredibly complex can be created based on floral, geometric, and animal patterns.
Join instructor Bob Byers to learn basic techniques for this wonderful art form just in time for Easter, with a special focus on butterfly-inspired patterns to celebrate our local tradition – Butterflies in the Garden.
Thursday, March 21 (6:00 – 9:00 pm)
Registration Deadline: Monday, March 18
$45/Adult or $50/Member Adult
Materials: Provided
Instructor: Bob Byers has been serving at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden since 2015 and took on his current role as Executive Vice President in 2021.
