Soil Building and Health

The foundation of a thriving garden is healthy soil. All too often we focus most of our energy – labor, budget, planning, treatments, etc. – on what we can observe above ground. But our most precious gardening resource is below the surface. In this class, we will discuss how to determine existing soil quality, soil mixes for raised beds, fertilizer options, and how to effectively increase soil health over time. Real world examples will be discussed to show how you can achieve great soil in your own garden.

Instructor: David Cole is currently the Learning Lab Manager and an adjunct faculty member for the Horticulture program at Tarrant County College (TCC), where he has been for six years. David has worked in Texas agriculture for over 20 years in a diversity of fields, including: organic farming; sustainable agriculture training and education; landscape horticulture; landscape irrigation; urban farming/community gardening; livestock and forage production; and prairie restoration. He graduated from Texas A&M University with a BS in Soil and Crop Science.
