Begonia Species Bank

Many Americans know begonias as a standard bedding plant, but the true diversity and beauty of the plant is reflected in the Begonia Species Bank. The collection contains over 800 species and over 800 hybrids of the tropical plant, making it the largest recognized Begonia collection in North America.

Highlights

Begonias grow in the wild throughout tropical and subtropical regions of the world, and often face loss of habitat from deforestation, logging, mining, and agriculture. The Begonia Species Bank serves as insurance against their extinction with additions constantly being made to the collection through propagation and the acquisition of new species.

  • First and only botanic garden in Texas to receive accreditation for its Begonia collection by the North American Plant Collections Consortium in 2014
  • Gained accreditation through the Plant Collections Network in 2015
  • The only accredited Begonia collection in the United States
