Retention ponds not only collect stormwater, they also filter pollutants through wetland plants. And they can increase biodiversity in urban areas by providing shelter and habitat for migrating birds, insects, and urban wildlife. They do, however, require an effort to construct and maintain. If you are considering the use of a pond to manage stormwater, do your homework to understand the risks and benefits.
