Growing Citrus Trees
Start your citrus-growing journey with confidence! Learn the history of cultivated citrus, essential care tips for Texas conditions, and pruning techniques for compact dwarf varieties—great for small spaces. Each participant will receive a 1-gallon Ichang lemon tree, grown from seed in the Garden. Known for its cold hardiness, this variety produces large, flavorful fruits when mature and is perfect for container gardening. With guidance from our expert horticulturist, you’ll shape your tree into an elegant espalier form to boost growth and fruit production. By the end of the class, you’ll have the skills to nurture your tree for years of harvests.
Registration includes same-day Garden admission, so explore the grounds before or after class! Your tree may take up to 10 years to bear fruit, but the techniques you’ll learn apply to most citrus varieties. Our Adult Education team is here to support your gardening journey.
