November Lunchtime Lecture: Taxonomy of the blueberries of the Philippines

“Taxonomy of the blueberries (Vaccinium L., Ericaceae) of the Philippines”

A (Virtual) Lunchtime Lecture by Maverick Tamayo

Join us as graduate student Maverick Tamayo from Texas Christian University shares his research related to botanical exploration of the Vaccinium group (Ericaceae) in the Southern Philippines.

The genus Vaccinium is one of the most speciose and less studied plant group in the heather family Ericaceae. This genus is estimated to comprise ca. 450-500 species worldwide. The Philippines shares a part of this diversity with 40 species recognized thus far. But this number is expected to increase in the coming years as many more areas in the country are explored. In this lecture, the diversity and taxonomy of the Philippine Vaccinium will be tackled with emphasis on new species discovered as part of the NSF-funded project “Plant Discovery in the Southern Philippines” (NSF award #1754697). Their conservation status and ecological notes will also be discussed. This 1-hr seminar includes a short Q&A session after the lecture.
